Secretary of Defense Hegseth Vacates Mainstream Media Out of Pentagon Offices

Newly appointed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has ordered a number of mainstream media companies to leave their offices in favor of conservative news groups in a radical reorganization of the Pentagon's press corps. The action rocked the media scene in Washington.

The directive provides the New York Times, NBC News, NPR, and Politico with a deadline of February 14 to vacate their Pentagon office spaces. The New York Post, One America News Network (OAN), and Breitbart News Network will serve as their successors. The Huffington Post will also receive office space for one year, despite not requesting it, according to a memo obtained by the Daily Mail. This came as an unexpected surprise.

The Pentagon's press restructuring, according to The Post Millennial (TPM), introduces a new rotating scheduling system in which media outlets would alternate office spaces on one-year periods.

The adjustments are intended to "provide access to the limited space in the Correspondents’ Corridor to outlets that have not traditionally experienced the privilege and journalism value of working from real office space at the Pentagon," according to Pentagon spokesperson John Ullyot, who justified the moves.

TPM also reported that the New York Times promptly expressed its disapproval of the move, calling it a "concerning development" and emphasizing the Pentagon's crucial role in American administration. "The Department of Defense has the greatest discretionary budget in the nation, millions of Americans in uniform under its command, and control over a huge arsenal supported by taxpayers," a Times spokeswoman said.

The administration is also seeking to reinstate credentials for journalists whose access was apparently canceled during the Biden administration. Radical mainstream media pundits should have had some idea that retribution was on the way after its vicious attempt to smear Pete Hegseth ahead of his confirmation hearing. (Video Below)

The change marks a fundamental departure in how the Defense Department handles its interaction with the media. With more than two dozen news organizations already based in the Pentagon, competition for limited office space has always been fierce. This new rotating approach has the potential to produce a more dynamic press corps atmosphere, but some critics believe it would destroy established reporting networks and institutional expertise.

The ruling comes after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that independent journalists are now able to apply for press access to the White House briefing room, including podcasters and social media influencers. The government is also giving access back to people whose credentials were "wrongly revoked" during the Biden administration, according to Leavitt.

The impacted organizations now have to deal with the logistical problem of moving their operations while continuing to cover national security and military topics. Defense Secretary Hegseth’s message can rightly be interpreted: “Pentagon press access must be earned through accurate reporting.
