Milwaukee Judge Arrested for Obstructing ICE Operations

First reported by FBI Director Kash Patel, Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan was detained Friday morning on suspicion of obstructing a federal immigration operation. Patel accused Dugan of “intentionally misdirecting” federal authorities who were trying to arrest Eduardo Flores Ruiz, an undocumented person, in a since-deleted tweet.

In a since-deleted statement, FBI Director Kash Patel claimed that Judge Dugan helped an illegal immigrant evade capture in her courtroom by interfering with a federal immigration arrest. Brady McCarron, a spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service, confirmed that Dugan was arrested at the Milwaukee County Courthouse at approximately 8 a.m. and is currently being held in federal custody.

In an internal email, Chief Judge Carl Ashley admitted that ICE officials had brought an arrest warrant to the courthouse on April 18th, but he did not identify Dugan or mention the pending federal investigation. The arrest happened inside the Milwaukee County Courthouse at around eight in the morning. Dugan is currently in federal jail, according to Brady McCarron, a spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service in Washington, D.C., who confirmed the arrest to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The FBI was looking into whether Dugan obstructed federal authorities during an immigration arrest attempt last week, according to a prior Journal Sentinel report. They stated that on April 18, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers showed up at the courthouse to carry out an arrest warrant for Flores Ruiz, who was supposed to show up in Dugan's courtroom.

Chief Judge Carl Ashley acknowledged the presence of ICE officials at the courtroom that day in an internal email forwarded to judges, which the Journal Sentinel examined. However, Ashley omitted any reference to Dugan or the federal investigation.

Patel also attested to the fact that Flores Ruiz is currently under federal arrest. Although the FBI has not yet made a formal public announcement, Patel's comments imply that the agency thinks Dugan's actions directly helped Ruiz evade capture on the first try.
