New Audit Exposes $10 Billion in FEMA Mismanaged COVID Funds

According to a recent audit, FEMA mismanaged about $10 billion in COVID-19 relief funding, which included $32.8 million in fraudulent payments, $8.1 billion in "questioned expenditures," and $1.5 billion in unconfirmed state medical charges.

According to a Department of Homeland Security audit, FEMA did not distribute COVID-19 relief monies in accordance with the correct protocols. While $8.1 billion is still being reviewed, $1.5 billion was given to one state without enough screening. The conclusions follow the dismissal of FEMA's CFO for authorizing $59 million in upscale hotel stays for undocumented immigrants.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) wasted approximately $10 billion in COVID-19 relief money between 2020 and 2023, according to a damning audit conducted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The January study outlines a number of financial errors that led to the improper oversight of the distribution of billions of taxpayer cash.

One of the audit's most concerning conclusions was that $1.5 billion had been given to one state for medical personnel without the necessary screening. The study says the money "might have been put to better use for future calamities," but it does not name the state. FEMA also disbursed $8.1 billion in "questioned costs"—expenditures that have not yet been confirmed to be permitted under federal regulations. Inappropriate payments of $32.8 million were also discovered during the examination.

The agency's failure to adhere to established procedures in the face of the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic is the reason for these failures, according to the report. Nevertheless, critics contend that this mismanagement was avoidable and underscores the need for greater accountability within FEMA and the broader DHS.

These disclosures follow a distinct scandal that resulted in the termination of Mary Comans, FEMA's Chief Financial Officer. An egregious misuse of funds that garnered sharp criticism from President Trump was discovered when the agency spent $59 million on luxury hotel stays for illegal immigrants in New York City. Immediately following the scandal, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin announced the termination of Comans and three other FEMA officials who were implicated in the payments.

After recently drawing attention to FEMA's dubious spending, Elon Musk has called on the government to recoup taxpayer money that was squandered. "That money is being squandered on upscale hotels for illegals when it could be used for disaster relief in the United States!" Musk made a post on X. It is unclear if FEMA will be able to recover the billions of dollars in misappropriated pandemic aid, despite DHS Secretary Kristi Noem's promises to uphold President Trump's policies and combat financial waste.
