Musk Warns Federal Workers: Comply with President Trump’s Return-to-Office Directive or be Placed on Administrative Leave

On Monday, Elon Musk said that government workers who do not follow President Trump's order to return to work will be put on administrative leave. Musk said that workers had been given plenty of notice and that the new rule would start right away. Musk's warning followed an announcement on Saturday, instructing workers to report their weekly activities or face potential termination.

Musk told government workers on Saturday that they had to turn in a report about what they had done the previous week. The Office of Personnel Management sent emails threatening termination if not submitted by Monday at 11:59 p.m.

Different federal departments had different reactions to the order. Employees were told not to follow through by the FBI, the State Department, the Pentagon, and the Department of Homeland Security. Meanwhile, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Department of Health and Human Services gave workers mixed messages at first before finally telling them to follow the rules but then changed its mind late Sunday night.

Elon Musk is taking a tough stand against federal workers who do not follow President Trump's order to resume face-to-face employment. Those who have not returned to work will be put on administrative leave, Musk, who was appointed head of the Department of Government Efficiency, said Monday morning.

Musk posted on X, "Those who disregarded President Trump's executive order to resume work have now been warned for more than a month." "Those who continue to miss work will be placed on administrative leave as of this week."

Musk issued a directive over the weekend asking all federal employees to submit reports outlining their activities during the previous week, which is followed by this warning. Employees have until Monday evening to turn in their reports or risk being fired, according to emails from the Office of Personnel Management. According to Musk, the process should be finished in less than five minutes. But the order caused uncertainty throughout the federal administration. While some agencies pushed back, others told their staff to cooperate. Under the leadership of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Department of Health and Human Services first instructed its 80,000 workers to comply but then changed its mind and instructed them to "halt actions" pertaining to the request until Monday at noon.

Other agencies adopted a more assertive position. Ambassador Tibor P. Nagy, acting undersecretary of state for management, sent a message stating that staff will react on behalf of the State Department. Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security, FBI, and Pentagon told staff not to comply with Musk's order. Recently confirmed by the Senate, FBI Director Kash Patel specifically instructed agency staff to ignore the request.

President Trump praised Musk's strategy despite criticism, but he urged Musk to exert more pressure. "ELON IS DOING A GREAT JOB, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HIM GET MORE AGGRESSIVE. REMEMBER, WE HAVE A COUNTRY TO SAVE, BUT ULTIMATELY, TO MAKE GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE. MAGA!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
