Decades of Unfair Trade Reversed As Lawmakers, Steelmakers, Ranchers and More Applaud President Trump’s Tariffs

President Trump's announcement on Wednesday applying new basic tariffs on imports sparked a surge of support from across the political and economic spectrum.
The occasion was regarded as historic by Speaker Mike Johnson. "With Liberation Day, President Trump is making it obvious that unfair trade practices will no longer exploit America," Johnson stated. "These tariffs level the playing field for American workers and innovators and restore fair and reciprocal trade."
Speaker Mike Johnson commended the White House for reaffirming fair-trade principles on behalf of workers and entrepreneurs, saying that Trump's tariffs sent a "clear message" that America "will not be exploited" any more.
The new tariffs, according to Coalition for a Prosperous America Chairman Zach Mottl, represent "a permanent, universal baseline" that "safeguards our economic security from adversaries like China" and resets decades of ineffective policy.
"The Golden Age of America's economy is here," said Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, who greeted the change as the start of a new era. Cheers to Liberation Day! That view was shared by Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, who described the measure as "bold" and long overdue. He declared, "We cannot permit other nations to continue mistreating our employees and job creators."
Leaders in manufacturing and agriculture quickly jumped in as well. Trump's plan "will ensure fair treatment for America's cattle producers," according to Ethan Lane of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, while Philip K. Bell, president of the Steel Manufacturers Association, attributed $20 billion in domestic steel investment to the president's tariffs.
With reference to 232 steel tariffs and fresh initiatives to establish the United States as a global manufacturing powerhouse, Bell declared, "President Trump is a champion of the domestic steel industry."
Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas described the action as "a win for America's farmers and ranchers" and "a fight for long-term solutions." Florida Senator Rick Scott declared that it was the end of "the days of the U.S. being taken advantage of."
Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York connected the action to Trump's larger "America First" agenda. She declared, "We will not permit other nations to exploit us." "America and the American worker must come first."
There was strong support even within Trump's administration. “The world begins to take us seriously today,” said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Finally, our employees shall receive equitable treatment. "Massive announcement by @POTUS today restoring U.S. dominance," said EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin.
The message was apparent from the endorsements, which came from various industries, including manufacturing, steel, agriculture, and congressional leadership: Trump's tariffs are being portrayed as the first step in a fresh battle for American economic dominance, one that many Republicans and business leaders are enthusiastically supporting.
