Democrat Rep. Al Green Censured by the House for Disrupting President Trump’s Speech

Republican leadership moved quickly in response to the tirade by Rep. Al Green during President Trump's speech on Tuesday. House Speaker Mike Johnson urged order as Green persisted in his disturbances. Johnson first forewarned Democratic members that if they continued to cause trouble, the Sergeant at Arms would take action, but they disregarded his warning.

As Green persisted in shouting, Johnson officially instructed the Sergeant at Arms to expel him from the chamber. “Given that members persist in willful and concerted disruption of proper decorum, the Chair now instructs the Sergeant at Arms to restore order,” Johnson stated.

By a vote of 211-209, the House approved the resolution of censure against Representative Al Green. Speaker Mike Johnson repeatedly reminded Green to observe House etiquette, but he disregarded his warnings and was removed. Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) presented the censure resolution, which denounces Green's actions as a violation of appropriate behavior.

Rep. Dan Newhouse came up with H. Res. 189, a motion to censure Green, saying that his actions had "disrupted the proceedings" and broken House rules. The motion specifically said that Green had been dismissed because he wouldn't follow proper behavior.

Democrats tried to stop the censure vote by asking for a motion to put it on hold, but it did not work. Moving forward with the censure is a big step that shows House Republicans are holding members responsible for breaking the rules of the body.

This event shows how tense things are between Republicans and Democrats in the House during President Trump's second term. The House will keep going with the censure process as they get closer to a final vote on officially scolding Green for what he did.
