Over the weekend, President Donald Trump commended the US Central Command (CENTCOM) for conducting a precision airstrike in Syria that resulted in the elimination of a senior terrorist figure who was affiliated with al-Qaeda. CENTCOM Commander Gen. Michael Kurilla and US warfighters were commended by Trump in a Truth Social post for administering "justice to another jihadi threatening America and our allies and partners."
A high-ranking finance and logistics official from Hurras al-Din (HaD), a terrorist organization affiliated with al-Qaeda and operating in Syria, was slain in an airstrike that took place on Saturday. Trump said, "US forces executed a precision airstrike against a member of al-Qaeda in Syria this weekend," confirming the attack on Truth Social. The terrorist leader collaborated with al-Qaeda throughout the area.
A number of terrorist cell members were gathered at a location known for terrorist activity, along with vehicles carrying anti-aircraft artillery guns and munitions. Both the trucks and the anti-aircraft guns were destroyed as a result of the synchronized airstrike at the intended area. Coalition soldiers also used anti-aircraft guns to target another vehicle during the operation. Both the car and the building it was parked next to were destroyed in the collision.
CENTCOM continued to "disrupt and degrade efforts by terrorists to plan, organize, and conduct attacks against civilians and military personnel from the U.S., our allies, and our partners throughout the region and beyond," according to a statement the agency released.
A senior al-Qaeda terrorist leader was killed by a targeted airstrike carried out by US forces in Syria over the weekend. The operation targeted a high-ranking member of Hurras al-Din, an al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group that has been operating in Syria's Idlib Province since 2018, according to a CENTCOM statement. HaD is a terrorist organization that "advocates attacks against the West and Israel" in order to establish an Islamic caliphate in the Middle East, according to the National Counterterrorism Center.
President Trump openly acknowledged the strike on Truth Social and praised the military's precision and efficiency. "US forces performed a precision attack against a member of al-Qaeda in Syria this weekend," Trump wrote. "The terrorist leader collaborated with al-Qaeda throughout the region." He said, "Congratulations to CENTCOM Commander Gen. Michael Kurilla and the US warfighters who brought justice to another extremist endangering America and our allies and partners."
The airstrike is the latest in a string of counterterrorism operations carried out or facilitated by CENTCOM against ISIS and al-Qaeda-linked extremists in Syria and Iraq. While the majority of recent bombings against ISIS have included Iraqi security forces, operations targeting Hurras al-Din have been concentrated in Syria's Idlib province.
Additionally, US Africa Command (AFRICOM) has targeted ISIS-Somalia militants with at least two bombings this past month in Somalia as part of a larger operation to counter jihadist networks. An ongoing attempt to break up extremist networks and stop attacks on US and partner interests is reflected in the persistent pressure on terrorist organizations on several fronts.
“To protect our nation and U.S., allied, and partner personnel in the region, we will continue to pursue terrorists relentlessly,” stated Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, commander of U.S. Central Command.
