Civil Fraud Judge Engoron, who Oversaw President Trump’s Civil Fraud Trial Under Ethics Investigation

Judge Arthur Engoron, who presided over the historic civil fraud trial of the President Donald Trump, can find himself in serious water after violating court regulations by discussing the issue with a lawyer prior to his decision.

According to NBC New York, the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct is looking into a possible meeting between a real estate attorney in New York and the judge who awarded a $454 million judgment against Trump.

A few weeks prior to Judge Arthur Engoron's scheduled decision-making, real estate attorney Adam Leitman Bailey was said to have spoken with the judge, according to the publication. September 2022 saw the filing of a lawsuit by Democratic Attorney General Letitia James of New York, who charged Trump with inflating the worth of his real estate assets in order to obtain loans.

Bailey claimed in a television interview that he approached Engoron to share his perspective on a key legal issue related to the trial. He insisted that he intended to help the judge understand the greater implications of the harsh ruling against Trump, particularly for New York’s economy. However, such conversations are prohibited under New York’s judicial conduct rules unless all parties are notified and given a chance to respond,” the report said.

I actually had the ability to speak to him three weeks ago,” Bailey said in the Feb. 16 interview, according to NBC New York. “I saw him in the corner [at the courthouse] and I told my client, ‘I need to go.’ And I walked over and we started talking … I wanted him to know what I think and why…I really want him to get it right.

The lawyer claimed to have "explained to him" that the fraud act in question was not intended to be utilized in order to bring down a large corporation, especially in the absence of any victims.

He expressed concerns about the case's application of the law and suggested that the ruling might have a detrimental impact on New York's economy.
