D.C. Police Hit with Ransomware Extortion

Looks like the police department in Washington, D.C. is the new victim of a ransomware attack! After the Biden administration’s weak stance on the ransomware attack targeting the U.S.’s fuel supply, the D.C. police department is now in the grips of a Russian-speaking ransomware syndicate group identified as Babuk.
On Monday Babuk stated on their website that negotiations with the Washington police department had stalled because the amount offered for the department’s stolen data did not suit their demands. It was reported that the stolen data included disciplinary files for police officers.
This same group also claimed that it hacked other police departments and threatened to release the names of informants.
It looks like the Biden administration can partially take credit for opening up this pandora’s box of ransomware attacks with its lax approach.
