Will the 2024 Election Be Affected by Celebrity Endorsements?

The media is going crazy over Stephen Colbert's decision to take The Late Show on the road for the first time. The comedian's live performance at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this August is more significant than the fact that he is leaving the comforts of his studio. Naturally, he will not be acting in the same manner during the Republican National Convention. Celebrity endorsements are nothing new, and it's hardly surprising that Colbert and other celebrities are supporting President Joe Biden given Hollywood's historical left-leaning tendencies. But in November, will it really matter?

Some conservative media groups are protesting the announcement by CBS that Colbert will be broadcasting his program from the Auditorium Theatre from August 19 to August 22. But would his endorsement—or that of any other celebrity, for that matter—influence the outcome of the election? Many people speculated that Taylor Swift's performance at the Super Bowl might impact the outcome of the election, particularly if she backed Joe Biden.

In a survey conducted in February, Monmouth University discovered that 18% of Americans "believe that there is a real government effort for Taylor Swift to help Joe Biden win the presidential election." Even former President Donald Trump chimed in, saying, "Joe Biden didn't do anything for Taylor, and never will," and pleading with the celebrity not to support the incumbent.

But how much of an impact do celebrity endorsements really have? What role did celebrity endorsements play in previous presidential elections? Some people argue that "The Oprah Factor" in 2008 played a pivotal role in the election of former President Barack Obama. In addition to her magazine subscribers, Oprah Winfrey had a large following and her talk program attracted around ten million viewers each day. According to a September 2008 Pew survey, sixty percent of participants thought that Oprah's support would benefit Obama's campaign.

Jeffrey Katzenberg, the former chairman of Walt Disney Studios from 1984 to 1994, is running for the current president. In addition, he serves as Biden's 2024 campaign's national co-chair. In 2020, Lady Gaga not only performed at Biden's inauguration but also endorsed him. Although she hasn't declared her support for this election, she was chosen co-chair of the President's Committee on the Arts in April 2023, thereby gaining access to the president's advisor pool. Seth McFarlane, the man behind Family Guy, Tom Hanks, Eva Longoria, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé, Ellen DeGeneres, LeBron James, and Meryl Streep are among the other notables.

After the recent political hostility, one wonders how much of these celebrities' hard-earned reputations they are willing to invest or squander. Celebrities siding with politicians can come at a huge cost to credibility.
