President Trump Bumps Canada’s Tariffs Up to 50% in Retaliation for Ontario’s Threat to Charge Americans in Border States More for Electricity

In retaliation for Ontario's decision to impose a 25% higher power price on Americans in three border states, President Trump announced on Tuesday an extra 25% tax on Canadian steel and aluminum imports, increasing the overall duty to 50%.
An "abusive threat," according to Trump, is Ontario's electricity levy on New York, Michigan, and Minnesota. He promised to declare a National Emergency to mitigate its effects. If other long-standing trade disputes aren't settled, the president threatened to levy a high duty on Canadian auto imports by April 2nd, which could "permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada."
Trump also criticized Canada's meager military security commitments, claiming that the United States spends more than $200 billion annually subsidizing the nation's defense and that "this cannot continue."
On Tuesday, President Trump announced a steep increase in tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, the country's northern neighbor. The action, which comes after Ontario Premier Doug Ford's contentious decision to impose a 25% surcharge on power exports to U.S. border states, increases the current levy by an additional 25%, bringing the total to 50%.
Trump called Ontario's measure an "abusive threat" to American energy consumers and pledged prompt action in a post on Truth Social. In order to "quickly do what has to be done" to override Canada's price, Trump tweeted, "I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on electricity within the threatened area."
However, the trade war continued after that. In addition, Trump demanded that Canada remove tariffs on American dairy shipments of up to 390%, a move he had opposed during his first term. Trump threatened to further pressure by enacting higher tariffs on Canadian auto exports if Canada did not take action, a move he claimed would essentially destroy the nation's auto sector.
Trump threatened to "significantly increase, on April 2nd, the tariffs on cars coming into the U.S., which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada if other egregious, long-time tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada."
Trump also reaffirmed a long-standing complaint that the United States bears an unjust burden for the defense of its northern neighbor, taking aim at Canada's role in international security in addition to the most recent tariffs. Trump wrote, "Canada relies on the United States for military protection and pays very little for national security." "We are providing Canada with annual subsidies totaling more than $200 billion. WHY? This scenario cannot go on.
To remove trade restrictions and reduce Canadian taxes, Trump then suggested annexing Canada once more. He added, "Canada becoming our beloved Fifty-First State is the only thing that makes sense," asserting that it would provide greater security and economic relief. " And your wonderful national anthem, "O Canada," will still play, but it will now symbolize a great and powerful state inside the greatest country the world has ever observed!"
The Ontario provincial government suspended its planned fees on electricity exported to the United States after President Donald Trump threatened to boost his planned tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50% for Canada on Tuesday.
