President Donald J. Trump “Strikes Back” With 125% China Tariff Increase Response
By The Blog Source
Hours after China increased American import taxes to 84% and pledged to "fight to the end" in a growing spat that could stymie trade between the two biggest economies in the world, President Donald Trump on Wednesday increased tariffs on China to 125%.
President Trump's earlier decision to raise the tax on Chinese goods to 104% prompted Beijing to impose the new rate, which is already in effect, as part of increases that affected U.S. trading partners globally. Canada and Europe retaliated Wednesday by imposing further import duties on American goods.
Trump retaliated, citing "lack of respect," by halting tariffs on the majority of nations for 90 days and increasing them to 125% on China.
Trump posted on Truth Social, "I am hereby increasing the tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately, due to the lack of respect that China has demonstrated toward the world's markets." "China will eventually recognize that the current practice of exploiting the United States and other nations is neither sustainable nor acceptable."
In contrast, and in light of the fact that over 75 countries have contacted the United States' Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR to negotiate a resolution to the issues at hand, including trade, trade barriers, tariffs, currency manipulation, and non-monetary tariffs, and that these countries have not retaliated in any manner, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90-day PAUSE and a substantially reduced reciprocal tariff of 10% during this period, effective immediately. I am grateful for your consideration of this issue.
