A federal grand jury has indicted New York City Mayor Eric Adams, making history as the first sitting mayor to be charged with a crime in almost 200 years.

The announcement has generated a lot of discussion and anxiety for the city, particularly since public advocate Jumaane Williams would take over as acting mayor in the event that Adams resigned.

Williams "had been readying himself," according to the New York Times, as questions about Adams' administration arose.

Despite Adams' declaration that he would not step down due to the federal investigations against him, Williams has been gradually putting together the necessary preparations for the impending takeover. Williams recently expressed to reporters his doubts about Adams' ability to handle the charges that he is facing.

According to the Times, his office released a statement saying, "As the facts become clear, the public advocate will have more to say to the people of New York municipal, and right now, he is focused on how best to ensure that New Yorkers may reestablish trust, confidence, and stability in municipal government."

Adams' charge is the result of a federal investigation that has clouded City Hall for months, and U.S. Attorney Damian Williams is set to unveil it on Thursday.

Adams will turn himself in to police early next week, according to individuals close to the investigation, as reported by The New York Post.

Nevertheless, the mayor is unflinching in the face of these accusations. Adams insisted on his innocence and promised to fight the charges "with every ounce of my power and passion," saying, "I always knew that if I held my position for New Yorkers that I would become a target—and a target I became." 

Although the precise nature of the accusations is still unknown, many close to the Post speculate that they might have something to do with claims of receiving unlawful campaign funds from the Turkish government. According to reports, the probe is focused on a possible deal that would involve the permission of the Manhattan-based Turkish consulate.

This comes after a string of raids in September that sent shockwaves through City Hall and targeted senior officials in Adams' administration.

Along with at least three additional names, the indictment is anticipated to identify Winnie Greco, Adams' Director of Asian Affairs, and top campaign contributor Brianna Suggs.

Prosecutors are requesting all correspondence between the Adams administration and other foreign nations, such as Turkey, Israel, China, Qatar, South Korea, and Uzbekistan, as part of the extensive scope of the federal investigation.

Concerns concerning the investigation's ramifications and extent have been raised by these demands.  Known for his outspoken criticism of the immigration policies of the Biden administration, Mayor Adams has positioned himself as a champion of New York City's interests against what he perceives as federal negligence.

He is at odds with Washington as a result of this stance, and this dynamic now affects his legal issues.
