Why Was an Afghan Man, Who the FBI Arrested for Planning an Election Day Attack in the US, Identified by the Justice Department as a “Juvenile and Fellow Afghan National”?

According to the Justice Department on Tuesday, the FBI has detained an Afghan man who was planning an Election Day assault on American people after being influenced by the extremist group Islamic State.

According to charge documents, Oklahoma City resident Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, told investigators following his arrest on Monday that he and a co-conspirator anticipated dying as martyrs and that they had timed their attack to coincide with Election Day next month.

Arriving in the United States in September 2021, Tawhedi had been advancing his assault plans in recent weeks, according to officials. He had ordered AK-47 firearms, sold off family assets, and purchased one-way tickets for his wife and child to return to Afghanistan.

Although an FBI document highlights what it claims is evidence from recent months demonstrating Tawhedi's persistence in plotting an attack, it does not specify how exactly Tawhedi came to the attention of investigators. An image from July that is part of the affidavit shows a man who investigators have identified as Tawhedi reading "a text that discusses the rewards a martyr receives in the afterlife" to two small children, one of whom is his daughter.

Along with consuming propaganda from the Islamic State, Tawhedi reportedly donated to a charity that acts as a front for the militant organization and spoke with an individual the FBI had determined from a previous investigation was engaged in radicalization and recruiting of potential recruits. In July, he also watched the White House and Washington Monument webcams.

The FBI hired an informant last month to reply to the two's Facebook ads advertising the sale of personal belongings and begin a relationship. According to court documents, the informant later invited them to a shooting range where they ordered guns from an undercover FBI agent posing as the informant's business partner.

According to officials, Tawhedi was taken into custody on Monday after obtaining two AK-47 firearms and ammo that he had requested. Since the co-conspirator is a minor, the Justice Department withheld information despite the fact that he was also apprehended.

Tawhedi informed investigators he had planned an attack for Election Day that would target big gatherings of people after he was apprehended, according to the Justice Department.

Tawhedi, according to the Justice Department, entered the country in 2021 using a special immigrant visa and has been placed on parole until the end of his immigration proceedings. With significant personal risk to themselves and their loved ones, the program allows qualifying Afghans who assisted Americans to apply for family entrance into the United States.
