During a heated White House meeting on Friday, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance confronted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, telling him that his demand for U.S. security guarantees may lead to a worldwide crisis. Zelenskyy was accused by Trump of "gambling with World War III," pointing out that the United States had already provided Ukraine with substantial assistance. President Trump added, “What you’re doing is very disrespectful to this country—this country that’s backed you far more than a lot of people say they should have.

President Trump attacked Zelenskyy for being too fixated on U.S. security commitments to the future, stating, "You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people. You’re gambling with World War III." The main topic of discussion was the proposed U.S.-Ukraine economic deal, which calls for cooperative control of Ukraine's natural resources to finance reconstruction projects. Zelenskyy, who referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "terrorist," maintained that Ukraine requires specific security assurances, but Trump said, "I’m not going to make security guarantees...very much."

The security issue was not resolved, although the meeting did result in progress on a U.S.-Ukraine economic partnership. The economic agreement, which is anticipated to be signed in the near future, will establish a jointly managed investment fund. Ukraine will contribute 50% of prospective revenues from its natural resources, including rare earth minerals. Trump underscored the critical nature of these materials for U.S. industries, including military defense and artificial intelligence.

Zelenskyy's advocacy for a more comprehensive security agreement was met with skepticism, despite the economic discussions. "We are going to have Europe do that," Trump stated, indicating that he was not willing to make firm U.S. commitments.

In a social media message following his White House meeting, President Zelensky expressed gratitude to President Trump and the United States. He thanked Trump after writing, "Thank you, America; thank you for your support; thank you for this visit." Trump reprimanded the Ukrainian president earlier at the White House for "not acting at all thankful."
