Kamala Criticized for Avoiding Press After Becoming Democratic Nominee

Since emerging as the presumed Democratic presidential contender, Vice President Kamala Harris has not held a formal press conference for fifteen days, a move that has angered Republicans such as Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas.

Vice President Kamala Harris has been under fire, according to Fox News, for failing to organize an official news conference since emerging as the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination. Over the course of these fifteen days, Harris has been active on the campaign trail and has spoken with reporters briefly, avoiding a structured press conference or extensive interview.

Following his endorsement of Harris on July 21 and withdrawal from the contest, President Joe Biden effectively made Harris the de facto nominee. Her campaign is busy, and she interacts with the media informally, but people have remarked that she has not held a formal press conference.

The absence of Harris from the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago, where former President Trump participated in a contentious Q&A session, has been cited by critics. She and Biden spoke to media for a short while at Joint Base Andrews, but her lack of a longer press conference has drawn criticism.

Cotton emphasized that Harris needs to respond to important policy matters, like her position on oil and gas development, the prohibition of gas-powered vehicles, and the seizure of firearms. He said he did not think she could stick to her principles and that her extreme views would turn off supporters.

The unwillingness to participate in an official press conference is reminiscent of Biden's media avoidance strategies throughout the 2020 campaign. Professor of media studies at DePauw University Jeffrey McCall pointed out that the Harris campaign is probably cognizant of the precedent set by Biden's effective yet media-averse approach. Although her loyal followers would not demand accountability, McCall contended that winning over undecided people would eventually force her to deal with the media.
