Federal Advisory Committees on the Trump Administration Radar for Elimination
By The Blog Source
Numerous federal advisory panels are slated to be eliminated or drastically reduced as President Trump has signed an executive order to that effect. The Inter-American Foundation and the United States Institute of Peace are among the groups that will presumably be hit by the executive order signed aboard Air Force One.
According to the presidential order, within 30 days, members of the Cabinet are to assess all existing committees and boards and propose a list of further ones that should be disbanded. In his administration, Trump has made it a priority to cut wasteful government agencies to a minimum, if not eliminate them entirely. Trump has targeted entities such as the Health Equity Advisory Committee, the Presidential Management Fellows Program, and the U.S. African Development Foundation.
On Wednesday, President Trump signed an executive order that will eliminate or significantly reduce the number of federal advisory panels. This would be his most recent attempt to reduce the size and scope of the federal bureaucracy, which he sees as resisting his agenda.
The Inter-American Foundation and the United States Institute of Peace are among the organizations that the executive order is meant to target. Following his claim of direct control over commissions and boards such as the FDIC, SEC, and CFTC, Trump has taken this step. The Trump administration, following Trump's lead on government spending and efficiency, has asserted that these advisory committees often incur significant costs for taxpayers.
Within 30 days of receiving the directive, members of the Cabinet are to assess their own departments and make a list of any further boards or committees that could be subject to termination. Trump intends to abolish entire agencies or reduce their staffing levels to the minimum required by the statute. Congress has approved some committees, which could complicate efforts to remove them and pose hurdles to this approach.
Some of the organizations that will be affected include the Presidential Management Fellows Program, which prepares academics for positions in the executive branch, and the U.S. African Development Foundation, which helps African grassroots businesses. Also scheduled for review are the Health Equity Advisory Committee and the Advisory Committee on Voluntary Foreign Aid, both of which were formed by President Biden in 2024.
Staff members at the US Institute of Peace have donated to the Democratic Party, leading to accusations of political bias and an investigation into the institution. In a similar vein, the Inter-American Foundation is under attack because the current government sees it as a vehicle for spreading Democratic myths about migration.
