Education Department Facing $881 Million in Cuts: Will This Mark the End of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion?

Targeting diversity training and research initiatives, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced $881 million in contract reductions for the Education Department. The Institute of Education Sciences saw the termination of over 170 contracts. Among the cuts are 29 awards totaling $101 million for diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) training. This action coincides with President Trump's anticipated executive order to close the Education Department.
A significant step in the Trump administration's attempt to reform the Education Department was taken Monday night when the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced that it has reduced $881 million in contracts with the department. Nearly 170 contracts are targeted by the cuts, some of which are connected to the department's research branch, the Institute of Education Sciences (IES).
29 awards totaling $101 million that were associated with diversity, equity, and inclusion training are among the terminations. According to DOGE's statement, one of the awards was intended to teach educators how to assist pupils in identifying "areas of privilege and power" and in "interrogating the complicated histories implicated in oppression."
The nonprofit social science studies organization American Institutes for Research verified that it received several letters of termination for IES contracts on Monday. "The taxpayers are not receiving any return on their investment from the money that was spent on research, data, and evaluations that are almost finished," stated AIR spokesman Dana Tofig. He maintained that determining which government education programs are successful required the completed research.
The cuts align with a long-standing conservative policy objective: President Trump's anticipated executive order to close the Education Department. Linda McMahon, Trump's choice for education secretary, is scheduled to appear before Congress on Thursday.
Regarding the details of the terminations, neither DOGE nor the Education Department has yet to comment. The action, however, clearly shows a change in priorities, since the administration is working to cut back on government spending on education, especially for programs that support progressive social goals.
