China’s Foreign Ministry Threatens Retaliation Over President Trump’s New Tariffs

By The Blog Source

Beijing has threatened to respond after President Donald Trump's administration placed fresh taxes on Chinese imports, citing China's failure to reduce the flow of fentanyl-related chemicals into the United States. China dismissed the criticism, stating, "Fentanyl is America's problem."

To combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking, the U.S. will begin enforcing a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% extra duty on Chinese goods on Tuesday. The White House accused Beijing of facilitating money laundering linked to transnational crime and chastised China for failing to prevent precursor chemicals from getting to criminal gangs. China's Foreign Ministry denounced the duties as being against WTO regulations, saying that trade conflicts "have no winners" and vowing "appropriate responses."

Following the Trump administration's announcement of new tariffs on Chinese goods that will go into effect on Tuesday, Beijing is retaliating. The new policies include a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff aimed at China. The White House said these actions are meant to make countries responsible for their inability to stop illegal immigration and the flow of hazardous drugs, including fentanyl.

China's Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying, "China firmly deplores and opposes this move and will take necessary countermeasures to defend its legitimate rights and interests." The ministry asserted that "trade and tariff wars have no winners" and charged the United States with breaking WTO regulations.

China has been singled out by the Trump administration for allegedly facilitating the importation of substances linked to fentanyl into the US, which is causing an epidemic that kills more than 70,000 Americans every year. According to a White House statement, "Chinese officials have not taken the required steps to shut down money laundering by transnational criminal organizations and stop the flow of precursor chemicals to known criminal cartels."

Beijing responded by shifting the blame back to the United States, saying that "fentanyl is America's problem," through a Foreign Ministry official. The spokesperson made the case that China has taken the initiative to fight drug trafficking, pointing out that it was the first nation to designate drugs linked to fentanyl as restricted in 2019. The statement also said, "We have carried out counternarcotics cooperation with the U.S. in a broad-based manner." "Instead of threatening other nations with arbitrary tariff hikes, the United States ought to view and resolve its own fentanyl issue in an objective and reasonable manner."

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce, meanwhile, called Trump's tariffs a major violation of global trade standards and called on Washington to hold "honest dialogue" in order to improve collaboration. The Trump administration is adamant that economic pressure is required to combat the fentanyl epidemic as well as more general problems with illegal immigration and transnational crime, despite China's protests.
