Biden Invokes Executive Privilege to Block House Republicans from Obtaining Audio Recordings of Handling of Classified Documents

In order to prevent House Republicans from receiving audio recordings of his conversations with Special Counsel Robert Hur regarding his handling of secret documents, President Biden has claimed presidential privilege.

On Wednesday, Attorney General Merrick Garland asked Biden to invoke executive privilege over the recordings, which the House Judiciary and Oversight committees had subpoenaed.

"The President has decided to assert executive privilege over the recordings because of his longstanding commitment to safeguarding the integrity, effectiveness, and independence of the Department of Justice and its law enforcement investigations," White House counsel Ed Siskel stated in a letter that The Hill was able to obtain.

Hur's 345-page report, which determined that there should be no charges against the president, caused a political uproar because of its depiction of Biden's memory problems and his portrayal of the president as an elderly man with good intentions.

Hur referenced the 2017 exchanges between Biden and ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer, describing them as "painfully sluggish, with Mr. Biden struggling to read and communicate his own notebook entries at times and laboring to recollect events."
