STORM KILLS AT LEAST 10 PEOPLE
Reports have confirmed that at least 10 people have been killed in the South of the country by Tornadoes. On Saturday evening, Tornadoes killed at least 4 people and injured dozens in East Texas County. Falling trees, floods and high winds also killed 5 people in neighboring states. Two people were also killed in Missouri including a woman that was swept away inside a car by running water. Another two were killed in Mississippi.
Officials expect that the Interstate 44 near Hazelgreen, Missouri would re-open in 24 hours after flooding closed part of the highway. Crews in Western Kansas were expecting snow falling at 3 to 4 inches to subside before reopening Interstate 70.
Search teams in Texas were going from door to door on Sunday after Saturday’s Tornadoes wrecked so much havoc in that part of the country.
On Sunday morning, Canton Mayor Lou Ann Everett told reporters at a news conference, "It is heartbreaking and upsetting to say the least, we have at least four fatalities"
"The damage was extensive in the affected area. It is heartbreaking and upsetting.” Everett continued. She also added that 49 people had been treated for injuries.
The U.S National Weather Service in Canton confirmed three Tornadoes. Canton is 60 miles east of Dallas in Van Zandt County.
The first tornado report came on Saturday at about 4:45 pm. The storms swept through Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama on Sunday.
The Metro Nashville Police Department confirmed via its Twitter page that a 2-year old girl identified as Melanie Espinoza Rodriguez died in Tennessee after she was struck by a metal soccer goal post that was blown over by high winds. She was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital.
