OBAMA APPOINTED SURGEON GENERAL OUSTED AND REPLACED BY NURSE
The Surgeon General of the United States of America, Vivek H. Murthy, an appointee of the Obama administration has been removed by President Donald J. Trump. This was confirmed on Friday after President Trump asked him to resign. He has since been replaced by his deputy, Rear Adm. Sylvia Trent-Adams. Sylvia Trent-Adams is one of the first American nurses to serve as surgeon general. She will be in an acting capacity for now.
The Department of Health and Human Services confirmed Dr. Murthy’s departure in a statement released on Friday. “Today, Dr. Murthy, the leader of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, was asked to resign from his duties as Surgeon General after assisting in a smooth transition into the new Trump Administration.”
It was also added that Dr. Vivek H. Murthy will continue to serve as a member of the Commissioned Corps despite the termination of his appointment as Surgeon General. Rear Adm. Sylvia Trent-Adams is a veteran of the Public Health Service Corps and a previous chief nurse officer of the public health service.
Dr. Murthy thanked the Government and people of the United States of America for giving him the privilege to serve. In a post on his official Facebook page, Dr. Murthy wrote, “For the grandson of a poor farmer from India to be asked by the president to look out for the health of an entire nation was a humbling and uniquely American story. I will always be grateful to our country for welcoming my immigrant family nearly 40 years ago and giving me this opportunity to serve.”
Immediately after the announcement of Dr. Murthy’s resignation, the Twitter and Facebook pages of the surgeon general were updated to show Rear Adm. Sylvia Trent-Adams as the new acting surgeon general of the U.S.A.
